What is Somatic Experiencing?


Somatic Experiencing is a body-based approach that aims to support the resolution of nervous system symptoms resulting from acute stress or trauma that stay stuck in our bodies. Often, this is referred to as manifesting in nervous system dysregulation.

It works by inviting clients to gently explore their physical sensations and reconnect with their bodies in a safe and controlled way. The intention is to help the body complete its natural processing of self- protective responses and the release of thwarted survival energy that has stayed stuck in the body as a result of overwhelming experiences.

With the right, co-created conditions, we work to develop increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions by working by working with:

  • Body awareness (interoception, proprioception, exteroception)

  • Pendulation

  • Titration

  • Resourcing

Overall, the intention of Somatic Experiencing is to restore a felt-sense of balance and resilience that supports the nervous system in unsticking from the lingering effects of stress or trauma.
