What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing is a body-based approach that aims to support the resolution of nervous system symptoms resulting from acute stress or trauma that stay stuck in our bodies.
Our nervous systems are designed to know how to flow, but sometimes they get stuck. When we’re in flow, our nervous systems can seamlessly shift from states of moving+mobilizing, resting+digesting, and socially connecting.
However, when the overwhelm of stress or trauma are experienced, our nervous systems can become stuck in physiological patterns in fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. Often, this is referred to as nervous system dysregulation.
Since stress and trauma impacts us on a cellular level, we can’t just talk ourselves out if it. Even if it “makes sense”, it might not impact what our bodies continue to physically sense. In order to heal it, it needs to be felt and supported with the right co-created conditions.
Somatic Experiencing works by inviting clients to gently explore their physical sensations of their stuckness. The goal is to help the body complete its natural processing of self- protective responses, support the release of stuck survival energy, and widen one’s window of capacity enough to unstick the stuck pattern. Ultimately, this is what supports the nervous system to return to it’s innate knowing of flowing.
Overall, the intention of Somatic Experiencing is to restore a felt-sense of balance and resilience that supports the nervous system in unsticking from the lingering effects of stress or trauma.
